Jacqui Burnley
trained as an art teacher, has visited the masters at Beijing Academy, and has been teaching Chinese Brush Painting
since 1987. A former chairperson of the Chinese brush painting society, her paintings have been shown at many exhibitions,
and her original classes at Harrow Arts centre have grown in numbers and are still running. A typical Sunday workshop session in St Albans starts with coffee and biscuits while we wait for everyone to arrive - and admire any new paintings that people have finished between sessions. Then it's off to a busy morning alternating between demonstrations and trying things out with Jacqui coming round to give people individual attention and suggestions |
While books can
be very useful, there's really no substitute for being able to watch someone skilled demonstrate exactly how to
do things, especially for something like chinese brush painting where how you perform each brushstroke plays such
a major part in producing the end result - and is virtually impossible to describe with static pictures. After a break for lunch (often accompanied by an interesting video) we continue on in the afternoon, often producing a real painting using things we've done during the day. We round off the day with a review of the day's paintings - a chance to see how everyone else has interpreted the subject, and admire the differing styles. |
Here's
a finished demonstration along with the original. It's a tribute to Jacqui's skill that not only can she produce
wonderful demonstration pictures in a few minutes, but also explain clearly what to do - and field the occasional
question! - while doing so.The pictures on this page are from one of the St Albans Workshop sessions, usually held on the second Sunday of the month). In addition to the monthly St Albans sessions, and the Harrow Arts Centre classes, Jaqui teaches at Radlett and Hatch End, works with children with special educational needs, and provides private tuition. (Some outside term time only). |
